2009 Theme: Family Matters

2009 was the third year for BOOKS TO BRIDGE THE REGIONa reading initiative that encompasses seven Northwest Indiana counties: Jasper, Lake, LaPorte, Newton, Porter, Pulaski and Starke.

BOOKS TO BRIDGE THE  REGION uses a themed approach with selections at different reading levels so that families can read together and readers of all ages can enjoy the conversations generated by these books.

The 2009 theme was Family Matters. Selected titles were:

ADULT: The Ride of Our Lives
by Mike Leonard

YOUNG ADULT: The Watsons Go to Birmingham-1963 by Christopher Paul Curtis

      PICTURE/
EASY: A Day with Wilbur Robinson
by William Joyce

The books chosen for the theme, “Family Matters,” portray three very different families. The Ride of Our Lives describes an inspiring narrative of self-discovery and
self-fulfillment and how one unique family found blessings and simple
pleasures on the road called life. The Watsons Go to Birmingham-1963 sends Kenny and his family to Birmingham to visit his grandmother, but an unexpected
event makes Kenny see his family in a new light . A Day with Wilbur Robinson shows that each family is odd in its own way, but none is as eccentric as young Wilbur Robinson’s.

BOOKS TO BRIDGE THE REGION conducted a signature event for each age category, including author visit by Mike Leonard, and local schools, libraries, and communities planned related programs and events.
